Alexis Thompson missed the cut in 2008 US Women's Open - June

It didn't matter to Alexis Thompson that she had lowered her
scores in her second U.S. Women's Open by six shots.
Not a bit.
All she cared about where she stood Friday afternoon after
rounds of 75 and 77 at Interlachen Country Club.
"I just saw that I'm tied for 109th place, and that really
stinks," she said, tapping her shoes against the wall to
show her frustration. "I really thought I was going to play
well today and make the cut. I know I'm going to play in
more of these, but at some point I have to make a cut."
Don't bother to point out to Thompson, who improved to 94th
place when play was stopped due to darkness after a 2
1/2-hour weather delay, that she's 13, either. She became
the youngest to qualify for a U.S. Open last year, and then
matched that feat when she qualified at Loblolly Pines in
Hobe Sound this month.
"Try telling her that," said her father/caddy Scott,
referring to his daughter's age. "That's what her playing
partners were telling her. She doesn't want to hear that."
The elder Thompson admitted his daughter was more
disappointed by missing the cut by a projected two shots
than she was last year at Pine Needles when she shot rounds
of 76-82.
"She knows she can do it," Scott said. "She puts too much
pressure on herself. But this tournament does that to you.
I'm nervous out there just caddying."
Thompson's big mistake Friday was to hit her tee shot on the
par-4 fifth hole out of bounds. She battled back with a
birdie on her second ball for a bogey, but those two shots
loomed large when the round was over.
"That's the one shot I want over," she said.
Now it's back to the junior circuit for the Coral Springs
resident. Her family will stay at the Open for two more
days. Alexis even went directly from her post-round
interview to the putting green to work on her stroke,
leaving her dad to put the week in perspective.
"I know she's bummed," he said, "but this week has got to
help her." |
