Alexis Thompson missed the cut but made history - June 29,
2007
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- Alexis Thompson made it to the
weekend at the U.S. Women's Open, but not exactly the way
she wanted.
Thompson -- at 12 the youngest player in history to qualify
for the Open -- had a round cut short because of severe
weather for the second consecutive day Friday at 12-over 134
through 31 holes. |
Once second-round play resumes Saturday, the soon-to-be
seventh-grader probably will conclude her history-making
summer vacation to Pine Needles by missing the cut.
"Knowing that I'm not making the cut, like you're going to
be here Saturday and you made the cut, but it's (still)
pretty cool, being here another day," Thompson said.
When play was suspended amid the rumble of thunder, only 25
out of 156 players had finished the second round. It was to
resume at 7:30 a.m. EDT Saturday, although USGA official
Mike Davis made no guarantees.
Not much changed on the leaderboard from Thursday when there
was a 3 1/2-hour delay -- an 18-year-old named Park was the
clubhouse leader.
It was Angela Park after the first round, although she
didn't hit a shot on Friday. Her good friend, In-Bee Park,
bogeyed two of the last four holes for a 73 that put her at
even-par 142.
Michelle Wie, who opened with an 82, didn't get past the
practice range Friday. |
